Have you ever felt stuck, stagnant, confused and not sure how to progress to the next stage of a business venture or in your professional life?

More and more people are turning to business coaching as a way of taking things to the next level or transforming their careers. But what is all the fuss about – are coaches the new therapists?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential”.

Working with a coach can help you clarify your direction, identify strengths, think of creative solutions and strategies, increase your accountability and generally facilitate you on a journey of self-discovery.

Don’t expect the coach to do all the work however! As a ‘coachee’ you will need to be committed and authentic, have the courage ask yourself challenging questions (and try to answer them!) and be ready to learn more about yourself, even the bits you might not like so much.

Does this not sound a bit like therapy you might ask? Well that really depends on your own personal definition of therapy, and the qualifications the practitioners have are most likely very different. But it’s fair to say that there are some similarities.

There are many different styles of coaching and the approach will also depend on the personality and preferences of the coach, their previous experiences and values. Whereas many techniques are likely to be similar at the core, the way a coach uses them can vary widely.

It’s worth reflecting on exactly what you’re hoping to achieve, what your values are and what style of coach you would like before committing to a longer course of sessions. Most coaches will offer a short one-to-one introductory/assessment session free of charge to give you a feel for their style and to allow both to see if you would like to work together.

If you think coaching could be for you, here at Impact Hub Westminster we have a number of members who offer coaching – below is a list of them. They would be happy to talk you through how they work.
